A man who claims a right which is not his, is a tyrant. A man who has a right but does not know it, can be easily taken advantage of. A man who knows he has a right but does not exercise it, is a fence sitter who lacks civic consciousness. A man does not have a right but grabs and make use of it, is a despot

The Prince

1. Machiavelli argues that a leader should be both loved and feared, but that if you have to pick one, pick fear. What is your position on this? Have you any personal experience with these two positions?

2. Machiavelli argues that a Prince must always appear to be a good person for most will only ever see the appearance and not the reality. How important is it for a modern day leader to manipulate appearances?

3. Machiavelli argues that the Prince needs to make his people dependent on him so that they will support him. How could a modern business leader use this advice?

4. What modern political examples do we have of leaders who use fear to motivate others, who eliminate their opposition? Are there corporate equivalents?

5. Is it necessary to eliminate those who oppose you? What are some ways to accomplish this end? What are the organizational means to eliminate those who oppose you?

I. Background of the Study

Local legislative councils need clearly articulated mission statements, internal controls, performance audit procedures, codes of ethics, and a host of other management and conflict resolution techniques in order to function in an open, accountable and effective manner. The training and technical assistance to improve legislators skills and effective institutional strengthening requires a clear statement that should be of national priority by the national government.

In the Philippines as reported by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (2004), one way to contribute to the objective of the local governance is the strengthening of the management competence of local elective officials. The Department of Interior and Local and Government (DILG) should provide manuals and handbooks, organize training workshops and seminars, and conduct a study dealing with local government officials to enhance their committee management competence, performance capabilities and conflict management skills. Development and dissemination of practical tools should also be a priority of the central administrative agencies, so that expertise is transferred to local officials rather than used simply as a means of oversight control.

II. Review of Related Literature

To make the study more comprehensive, the researcher read several books and materials on management competence and conflict resolution skills in the internet, library, and the Offices of the City Councilors.

Caga-anan as cited by Pechora (1998), conducted a study on the legislative performance effectiveness of sangguniang bayan members of Bukidnon. The study which was based on the responses of 114 respondents from government and non-government organizations from the eight municipalities of the third district of Bukidnon, revealed that when grouped according to educational attainment, the respondents who are degree holders who were more effective; when grouped according to experience, the respondents who were on their second term performed effectively; when grouped according to age those who were on the age range of 46 years old and up performed effectively; and when grouped according to sex, females performed effectively compared to males. The said research was conceived with legislative performance effectiveness of Sangguniang Bayan members. Hence, this serves as a primary reference of the present study. The ultimate goal of ensuring that the trust of the people of Davao City to the city council members especially the city councilors is maintained, this research was conducted to find out the extent of managerial competence and conflict resolution skills of the city councilors.

Leveriza (1990) indicated that communication is not an integral part of management process but it is management itself. Effective communication is an essential management tool in attaining the goals of the organization. Communication can increase significantly decision making effectiveness. It can serve as a guide to action in analysis of the operational problems of the organization and the failure to develop the communication skills may trouble the management efforts.

III. Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on the theory of Fisher et al. (1991) which states that it is possible to reach win/win agreements if one can create a rational process where the right people are involved, the necessary data is available to fully analyze the conflict, there is a structure, and particular procedures and rules are to be followed. Indeed, providing structure, with procedures and ground rules, can provide a psychological container in which problem solving can occur and agreements can be made.

The above mentioned theory is supported by Berg and Smith (1987) that conflict and aggression are normal aspects and reflections of the human condition. Conflict is neither positive nor negative in and of itself. Rather, it is an outgrowth of the diversity that characterizes our thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, and our social systems and structures. Differences and conflict stir up feelings of discomfort, irritation, and anxiety. Because conflict stirs up these difficult feelings, it is often viewed as a problem to be fixed or gotten rid of, rather than an expression of a polarity/paradox that is inherent in group life.

Tips to Helping Improve the Battery Life of Mobile Phone

Here are my top tips to help prolong the battery life on the phone.

1. Allow the phone to completely discharge before recharging.
When it reaches full, take it off the power. Complete this cycle a few times and you may find that the battery life does increase somewhat. Some people have reported being able to get an extra day or so out of the battery following this procedure.

2. Turn off the screen saver.
When the screen saver is enabled, the screen stays lit up for quite a while after you have locked the keypad. This drains power needlessly so I recommend you turn this off.

3. Turn sleep mode off.
Yes, I know what you’re thinking but you can save your battery by turning this feature off. If you have sleep mode on, the screen goes completely blank when the phone isn’t being used. This means that if you want to check the time, see if you have a new text message or anything else, you need to get the screen to come on in its entirety. If you keep sleep mode off, you can quickly look at your phone to check these things without enabling the screen every time. This should help reduce battery life because you won’t have the screen on and off all the time.

4. Press the red soft key (the button you use to hang up) after you have locked the keypad.
This forces the phone’s screen to turn off much more rapidly than if left to its own devices.

5. Don’t leave the bluetooth or GPRS on.
Only enable bluetooth when you need it and set your GPRS settings so that it only comes on when it is required. Leaving it on constantly is pointless and a waste of your precious battery life.

6. Send a text instead of calling where possible.
Sadly, calling is one of the worst things to affect your battery on this phone so where possible, send a text instead. Bit of a tenuous solution, but nevertheless something to bear in mind.

Celebrating Life: Second Chance

Exactly two years today when I got into a tragic vehicular accident along Magsaysay Road, Nabunturan, ComVal. The accident happened around 9:40 in the morning when my group tracking the national highway going down to Tagum. In my surprised, the left front tire of the elf cargo truck carrying banana exploded and in just awhile the truck went head on position that eventually lead to collision

Thirteen passengers succumbed to that road accident, only the driver killed and the rest obtained physical injury of different degree, fractured hips, pelvic bones, shoulder and laceration. I was rushed to the nearby private hospital for immediate medical attention because of the injuries, knee and head-on laceration obtained.

The accident made me realized that life is truly unpredictable, that life is so short. Who know in split seconds or the next day you will die

Customer Service and the Walt Disney Company (Case Study)

The Walt Disney Company is one of the most well known examples of a company succeeding in large measure by applying the principles of customer advocacy and "service recovery"—principles that have become an integral part of Disney’s operations.

Prior to starting his own company, Integrated Loyalty Systems, Jake Poore spent close to 20 years in customer service working on service recovery for the Walt Disney Company in Orlando and Paris entertaining 25-35 million people a year.
According to Jake, "everyone makes mistakes, that's human. But how do you solicit those mistakes and rectify them so that the story is now possibly better than if there were no mistake at all?"

He goes on to explain that "uneventful does not create loyalty, and does not drive return visits or intent to refer new business…. So, how do you find your mistakes?"

Perhaps the worst outcome of all is a situation where mistakes aren't noticed and customers who experience poor service simply walk away without complaining and with no intention to return.
Jake points out that almost 70% of unhappy customers who decide to leave your business don't write letters of complaint. Finding and/or soliciting complaints by being proactive is the key—according to Poore, it's an art.
Finding customers who have complaints (legitimate or exaggerated) provides the best opportunity to fix the problem, retain loyalty and maintain satisfaction. Positive stories about bad experiences are just as important, and occasionally far more important, than positive stories about good experiences—the latter are expected while the former are impressive, more memorable and more likely to get repeated.

"If your customer goes home mad," Jake explains, "it is not only too late, but they will tell many people THEIR STORY." But if you can catch them and correct the error, "now they’re possibly telling YOUR STORY!"
Jake Poore was so successful at customer service while at Disney he went on to start his own company and is now President and Founder of Integrated Loyalty Systems, a consulting firm specializing in service development, process improvement, leadership training and service excellence.

Leaderhip Tips

History in its brightest and darkest moments witnessed the rise and fall of different leaders. There was Odysseus, Joan of Arc, Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler.

What common traits identified in those personalities mentioned? What leadership style they follow? I’m sure they have their own unique way of leadership.

For us to become a leader in our own rite we must guided and live with some basic rules.

WANNA BE A LEADER?…..FOLLOW THESE RULES…

A leader teaches through example not through words.
Arrives at work on time/first to arrive (punctuality is a virtue), exemplifies the work ethic, demonstrates the empathy and compassion that the staff must follow.

A leader praises their team and awards for accomplishment.
Always looks to catch people doing something right. Supervises and monitors the day to day activities.

A leader gives credit, yet never desires it
Guides the staff but allows them to make their own decisions that affect their work and then gives them the credit even though they perhaps could not have done it without the leader's help. In short, the leader sees growth as very important and let the subordinates grow on their own way.

A leader earns trust, never demands it
Earns trust by being honest and caring. Complete breakdown in trust will occur when a leader demonstrates an act of dishonesty or speaks disparagingly about another staff member in public. The staff soon believes that their leader may be dishonest in dealing with many things… or perhaps is speaking poorly to others about ME too.

A leader demonstrates good decision making skills
Makes decisions that are in the best interest of the WHOLE organization and thoroughly strives to understand all of the possible ramifications of their decisions

A leader has decipher their own character…they know their strengths and are able to admit and cope with their weaknesses.
Always secure enough to ask for help in areas of weakness

A leader responds well to criticism
Realizes that (constructive) criticism is part of the job…they not only accept it but they have the ability to look at it objectively to see if anything can be learned.

A leader is an expert communicator
Replaces demeaning phrases such as "that's not right" or "no, do it this way" with empowering statement such as "perhaps you may want to do it this way"…

A leader knows their organization. They recognize and respect that each person has their own individual characteristics, needs, strengths and weaknesses.

A leader never needs that symbolic "pat on the back" but realizes that everyone else does.

A leader is capable of putting aside all personal issues as they recognize the importance of peace and harmony on organizational productivity.

APPARENTLY, BEING A LEADER IS DEMANDING. IF IT WERE EASY….WE WOULD HAVE AN ORCHESTRA WITH ALL CONDUCTORS AND NO PLAYERS!

STILL WANT TO BE A LEADER?….IF SO, YOU MUST ABIDE AND LIVE BY THESE RULES!

Presidential Election 2008: United States of America to the World

A month from now, the world will be all eyes to the democratic process called election in the great bastion of democracy, the land of butter and honey, the land of the free and privileged, the United States of America.

This would be the most awaited event in the world before the year ends. Questions and anticipation are forming. Who would be the next seating chief executive in the oval office of the White House? Is there a change of foreign policy? What would be the course of international relations?

Whether or not a republican or a democrat president would succeed the Bush Administration? The anticipation is overwhelming on how the next American President give justice to famous words spoken by Abraham Lincoln, “Democracy, the government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Some people would say that the forthcoming election is the answer to the unstable US economy. Somehow, I’m hoping that at the least, it will eventually solve the problem.

The election can also be a change of personality alone not of anything else. That, in the guise of the new administration, same foreign and international policy remains. New Paradigm of Unilateralism, in short another selfish world regime reigns.

If we to assess the two presidential contender, Senators John McCain and Barak Obama. I find the latter almost one step-ahead to victory. His flat form of governance is reliable and very much timely. To quote Senator Obama in one of his speaking engagement, he said “All we do now be done in celebration for change, for the better. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change we’ve been waiting for.”

Manila Escapades (Part 1)

It's almost a month when I visited Manila and attended a very important convention. I have traveled at the height of emotional uncertainties because my mother during the time died and her body still lies at state in the funeral homes.

The situation doesn't stop me to fulfill my obligation to the my organization. What I did was mere a call of duty or shall I say a "command responsibility" as the highest official in Mindanao and member of the National Board.

My younger brother Jayvee supposed to be would join me in the said trip but I told him not to go along with because of the family mourning.

I really had fun on the said trip because I was not alone. Some of the senior Smpians were able to made it to the final list of delegates representing different areas of Mindanao. Dexter, Gerwin, Larry and office mate Nice able to joined me in the Manila Escapades.

The fun started from the time we departed from the Davao International Airport aboard the first flight of Cebu Pacific Air around 6:30 in the morning. While on our way to Manila aboard the plane, we experienced several turbulence up in the sky. I never got the chance to take a nap or little rest for I'm not at ease in the whole duration of our flight. I was thinking that the whole thing might result into ordeal. hehehe.

We arrived at the NAIA Terminal 3 around 8:30 a.m., safe and sound. We really had wonderful time to took pictures in the arrival areas and outside the building.

Here are some of the pictures taken during the said trip.
